We’re always impressed by the ideas brought forth by students at Washington University in St. Louis, and this semester’s Boeing Patent Challenge participants are no exception. Six teams participated in the Boeing Patent Challenge finals on April 25th, and four teams walked away with $5,500 in cash prizes.
The premise of the Boeing Patent Challenge is an exciting one: The student teams get access to Boeing’s library of patents; they then pick a patent, translate the patent to a different use, and develop a business plan around the idea. The only catch? Teams must have representation from at least three different schools! Not only is it a unique opportunity to work with Boeing’s intellectual property, but it also allows students to widen their peer network beyond their own college.
The Spring 2016 winning teams included:
- 1st Place ($2500): CyClean (filters coal processing plant emissions to create cleaner air)
- 2nd Place ($1500): IceOff (a coating for automobile windshields that prevents ice buildup)
- 3rd Place ($1000): SmartInk (provides an alternative solution to standard blood glucose measuring for diabetes patients)
- Skandalaris Center People’s Choice Award ($500): H2Osmosis (increases efficiency of reverse osmosis)
Awesome presentations from an awesome group of students! We can’t wait to see what next semester’s challenge brings!
