Atima Lui: HER Story After WashU

Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, Atima Lui (BSBA ’12) felt that her dark skin tone never quite fit in with the standard of beauty in her community. She is now changing the way women of color see beauty and fashion.

Taking her passion for black activism and female empowerment, Lui founded New York City-based NUDEST, a machine learning skin tone matching software for beauty and fashion brands. The patent-pending technology helps online shoppers identify products that match their unique complexion.

NUDEST, the company founded and run by Atima Lui, uses artificial intelligence to make it easy to find beauty and fashion that matches every skin tone.

In 2017, Lui was named one of CIO.com’s “Top 20 female entrepreneurs to watch,” and NUDEST has been featured by Forbes, CBS, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, The Huffington Post, SELF, and Style.mic.

Entrepreneurial thinking has always guided Lui. In her WashU days, Lui ran a profitable full-service hair, nail and tanning salon targeted toward multicultural customers while triple majoring in International Business, Marketing and Spanish.

After graduating from WashU in 2012, Lui worked in marketing for Walmart headquarters, then attended Harvard Business School. While there, she participated in the Harvard Venture Incubation Program and Harvard Rock Accelerator.
