Medical startup HIVE founded by Washington University alumni Joe Beggs (BME ‘20) and Glen Kleinschmidt (BME ‘21) was recently accepted to a selective 6-month accelerator program at mHUB, a premier hard tech innovation hub based in Chicago. HIVE is part of a cohort of nine early-stage ventures that focus on hard tech in the healthcare sector, with an emphasis on innovative, disruptive medical device solutions. The teams moved to the state-of-the-art facilities in November. Through this program, selected startups will gain access to mentorship, strategic connections within the industry, and clinical access from leading industry, community, and legal partners of the program.

HIVE’s participation in the mHUB accelerator program allows the company to grow and impact more people for the better with its groundbreaking technology. HIVE developed CloudConnect, a smart IV line that monitors when patients take (and forget to take) IV medication. Through CloudConnect, which continuously sends data to clinicians via its wireless sensor, medical professionals can help patients improve adherence to at-home IV medications and prevent expensive readmissions.

Along the way, WashU and the Skandalaris Center have supported HIVE and its journey. In the spring of 2021, HIVE won the Skandalaris Venture Competition, taking home $10,000 in funding. Reflecting on HIVE’s SVC participation, co-founder Beggs shared, “it’s allowed us to get some feedback throughout the proves instead of just one and done… my team also had a really good opportunity to grow throughout the process.”

Before co-founding HIVE, Beggs participated in the Skandalaris Center’s Leadership and Entrepreneurial Acceleration Program (LEAP) in fall 2019. He and his team subsequently won funding with their project SelfCap, a self-capacitance based wireless powering technology that improves the aesthetic value and user compliance of wearables and semi-invasive biosensors. During his time at WashU, Beggs was awarded the Spirit of Entrepreneurship award. In 2021, he was subsequently featured in St. Louis Business Journal’s “Inno Under 25” List, which recognized some of St. Louis’ up-and-coming young entrepreneurs and their innovative contributions to the local startup scene.

Congratulations again, HIVE, Joe, and Glen!
