I started this summer not knowing what to expect. As a rising sophomore in the Olin School of Business double majoring in Organization and Strategic Management and Creative Writing, I was looking forward to joining the workforce. However, I was entering a small law firm as a marketing and communications intern – I had no clue what estate planning or personal injury law even was.
In the back of my mind I had often considered becoming a lawyer, but was always daunted by the prospect of law school. Joining a small law firm in St. Louis seemed like the perfect choice to dip my toes in the field and learn more. Over these past 7 weeks, I can say that I now know what estate planning and personal injury is. While I don’t plan to become a lawyer, I am now much more confident in the subject.
Five years ago, Joseph Rousseau started Wayfinder Law, a small law firm based in St. Louis. When I first met Joe, I knew he was the type of person I would want to work for; he is personable, genuine, hardworking and most importantly, a great teacher.
Wayfinder Law deals in estate planning and personal injury law, focused on giving families peace of mind in navigating the complexities of legal matters. I have worked with Joe this summer setting up an online social media presence and strengthening the brand.
The hardest part of enhancing an online presence has been establishing and finding content that we wanted to represent Wayfinder Law. The Wayfinder accounts have slowly but surely gained followers– though it was slow going in the first couple weeks. As I posted 5 times a week across Facebook and Instagram, we ran into issues about making sure our content stayed relevant while also diversified and interesting. After some brainstorming, Joe and I were able to come up with a system for content themes, such as Testimonial Thursday. Scheduling these posts in advance for the week via Loomly allowed for a smoother publishing process.
With the social media process regulated, I was able to shift my focus to creating basic introductory guides for both estate planning and personal injury for potential clients. These guides have frequently asked questions and general terms a person should know if they are looking to estate plan or open a personal injury case. Generating these documents has helped to build my knowledge about the basics of these two areas of law. Extensive research and consulting with Joe has made me so much more confident in my comprehension and has also made me prepared for my future.
Working with a small business this summer has been an extremely rewarding experience. Going into work in-person is new to me, but I’ve come to greatly enjoy the structure between home and work it provides. Talking to Joe in-person everyday has led to greater experiences and let me learn from my mistakes in a low stakes environment. I’ve worn different hats while working at Wayfinder Law, and my projects have allowed me to dive deeper into litigation procedures and define my interests in the legal field. As this summer nears an end, I can say that working at Wayfinder Law has blown past my expectations in the best way possible.
