Building a Company with Heart: A Conversation with Maxine Clark, Founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop

Wednesday, March 10, 2021 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Maxine Clark

Hitting the jackpot as an entrepreneur often means starting a profitable, scalable company. For Maxine Clark, business success also includes the ability to give back to the community.

Join Skandalaris Center National Council member Maxine Clark in this virtual event hosted by the University of Missouri System. Clark will discuss founding Build-A-Bear Workshop, a teddy-bear-themed retail-entertainment experience, and how she used her entrepreneurial skills to fuel her passion for improving K-12 public education as well as her investments in women and minority entrepreneurs. Bryson Ferguson, a Mizzou business management major and Stamps Scholar from McKinney, Texas, will lead the conversation.

Today, there are more than 400 Build-A-Bear Workshop stores worldwide and nearly 200 million stuffed animals have been sold. In June 2013, Clark stepped down from her CEO role in the company to focus more time on the Clark-Fox Family Foundation and its mission to support the growth and prosperity of the St. Louis metropolitan region through research, program development and investments in education, public health, immigration, social justice and other areas. Her latest project is the Delmar DivINe, a multi-use real estate project being reimagined north of Delmar in the city of St. Louis.
