Making Connections That Matter: Summer Interns Learn the Fundamentals of Effective Business Networking

Building a successful career often starts with building meaningful relationships.

As part of the Skandalaris Center’s summer programming, students participated in The Fundamentals of Effective Business Networking, led by entrepreneur, connector and business development professional Chris Ruzicka. The session challenged interns to rethink networking—not as a transactional activity, but as an opportunity to create genuine connections, help others and open doors to future opportunities.

Networking Is More Than Exchanging Business Cards

Throughout the session, Ruzicka emphasized that effective networking is not about collecting contacts or working a room. Instead, successful networking is built on authenticity, curiosity and a willingness to help others.

Students learned that some of the strongest professional relationships begin with simple conversations and shared interests. Rather than focusing solely on what they hope to gain, participants were encouraged to think about how they can provide value to others, make introductions and become resources within their own networks.

One of the session’s central themes was that networking creates opportunities when people consistently invest in relationships over time. Whether seeking career advice, industry insights or future collaborations, the strongest networks are built on trust and mutual support.

Practical Strategies for Building Relationships

Ruzicka shared actionable techniques students can immediately apply throughout their internships and careers. Topics included preparing for networking meetings, developing an elevator pitch, researching attendees before events and approaching conversations with a mindset of listening first and speaking second.

Students also discussed strategies for navigating larger networking events, including introducing themselves to people they don’t know, approaching individuals standing alone and setting goals for what they hope to learn or accomplish during an event. The presentation reinforced that networking skills improve with practice and that even small interactions can lead to meaningful opportunities.

Leveraging the Network You Already Have

Beyond external networking, the session highlighted the importance of building relationships within organizations. Students were encouraged to connect with colleagues, seek advice across departments and volunteer for projects that allow them to expand their visibility and experience.

Ruzicka also discussed the role of LinkedIn and professional online presence, encouraging interns to maintain updated profiles, share accomplishments and use digital platforms as tools for relationship building and long-term career development.
