The Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship put on an interdisciplinary exhibition, The Creator’s Gallery, making it possible for creators of all types, disciplines and ages to display their work together.
While the Skandalaris Center is often referred to as Washington University’s “entrepreneurship center,” entrepreneurship is not its only focus.
“Entrepreneurship is not for everyone,” explains Emre Toker, Managing Director of the Skandalaris Center, “Knowing this, the Skandalaris Center aims to train the Washington University community to think differently in general, to approach problems and challenges with a creative mindset. If we can instill this value of creative thinking in our community, they will be better equipped to innovate in their workplaces or even become entrepreneurs later on.”
To live out the goal that Toker explains, the Skandalaris Center structures its programs through the funnel of Creativity > Innovation > Entrepreneurship. The first part of the funnel, Creativity, is the reason the Creator’s Gallery was formed; the Skandalaris Center wanted to connect the many creators in the Washington University community—inventors, makers, artists, performers, and any other creative mind.
Kristie Wickwire is the Office Coordinator for the Skandalaris Center and the lead on Creativity initiatives. She explains that “by showcasing work from all disciplines and levels, the Creator’s Gallery celebrated the value of everyone’s creativity.”
An alum of the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art, Wickwire curated the fifty-four-piece exhibition in a way that allowed the gallery visitors to find connections between vastly different works. “The Creator’s Gallery provided a space to consider how one person’s creativity can relate to someone else’s in unexpected ways,” Wickwire concluded.
The other gallery coordinator was Rob Hall, a Washington University freshman and the Creative Programs Assistant at the Skandalaris Center. A marketing major and graphic design minor, Hall also showcased his work in the interdisciplinary gallery.
“Seeing my work next to a wide array of mediums was a beautiful thing,” Hall commented, “I love to see how creativity can manifest in such a variety of ways.”
After being involved in the Creator’s Gallery as both an organizer and exhibitor, Hall plans to remain active in creativity and entrepreneurship at Washington University. “I hope to continue working on my art-based startup,” he says, “and continue to stay involved with other creators on campus to promote and support each other’s work.”
The Creator’s Gallery lasted three days in the Skandalaris Center’s co-working space in the Mallinckrodt Center. Featuring thirty-nine creators from six of the seven Washington University schools, and representing all levels (undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, postdocs, faculty, and staff), it was a compelling presentation of the dynamic talents that the Washington University campus community possesses.
