On March 5, 2021, the Skandalaris Center hosted an Innovation Activation centered around exploring the ever-evolving nature of “work”. WashU parents Andrew Sachs and Frederik Bond joined one another in a conversation where Fredrik shared his work, how he got his start in the highly competitive TV commercial business, and how each commercial is like building a business.

Following are a few key takeaways from Andrew and Fredrik’s conversation.

  • The nature of developing commercials and film is akin to the nature of building a business. They both require pitching, location scouting, financing, etc.
  • Take a huge risk and leverage that into something.
  • Have a path, work toward your goal.
  • There are many opportunities for students looking to go into film including cinematography, location/set manager, copywriters, and creative director.
  • The best ideas can come from anyone on the team.
  • You will make mistakes. Learn from them.

The interactive conversation allowed attendees to connect with Andrew and Fredrik while learning the creative process behind some of Fredrik’s most popular commercials.
